The skin on the lips is particularly sensitive and differs greatly from the rest of the facial skin. The red of the lips consists of a thin, non-pigmented layer of tissue, the non-keratinised squamous epithelium, through which capillary blood vessels shine. In cooler temperatures, the lips may turn blue in colour. The lips only have a few sebaceous glands, so they are only moisturised by the saliva film produced when eating and speaking.
